Summer lov'in happened so fast

"Aren't you going to marry her?"

Oliver was stunned by the question. He couldn't believe Axton would ask something so serious. They were out in the heat, and neither could last five minutes on the basketball court. They were the only two idiots out here and nine in the morning.

"Should I?"

True, Oliver had always wanted a proper family because he never actually had one. Not that he blamed his Dad, or anything. It was just a dream. And it hadn't happened with Carrie's mother. Maybe it was his fault.

"Well, Gabby is really trying. She is helping you, isn't she?" Axton said it might be the right thing to do.

"I don't know."

Oliver dribbled the ball, but found that the ball was actually hot too. It felt as strange as him and Gabby getting together. He nursed his bottom lip, thinking it was stifling out here just as much as wondering what was next with Gabby. "Maybe I'm too old for taking a chance like that."

Axton laughed at him. "Look, man, you got the teaching job now. You need to make things right. You gotta take a chance."

"I know. It's just I keep trying to just..well, make Gabby not want me around. I can't tell her I'm OK with-"

"Come on, don't make this up. You two sleep in the same bed, don't you? You feel comfortable with each other. It's these kind of things that make a marriage work." Axton's pleasant smile practically sold Oliver who tossed the ball back to Axton.

With a shrug Axton posed to shoot the ball in the basket, but he didn't. He grabbed it instead. "Let's go in. It's too hot out here."

  2. Hello Ellie,
I wish you a happy Sunday!
As for your story, I think it reflects today's couples: no one wants to take on the responsibility of a more serious relationship, marriage! They live in the comfort of superficial relationships, those summer affairs that last a holiday and then end! Well spotted!
Keep up the creativity, I really like you! Hugs

  3. Today's relationships are more volatile, and even if they live together, often both, or one of them, don't want to commit to marriage.

  10. Marriage doesn't suit everyone these days, and more and more people are living without marriage.

  13. I belong in an old mindset where marriage provides two people to evolve together as better and mature individuals. I think it’s quite a great institution where people can turn in flexible attitudes rather than hardwired ones, but it’s just personal opinion

  14. Sometimes people overthink things.
How can you tell if a marriage or serious relationship will work if you don't try?
It's like riding a bicycle or driving a car. You just have to do it. Yes, it takes some effort, and there is responsibility for yourself and others, but that's life.
