Ellie couldn't figure out what was wrong with her sister, but something just wasn't right. She was practically listless. Ellie assumed she was spending way too much time with Geo. That had to be it, but she wasn't going to bring him up.
"Should we make you an appointment?" Ellie asked, "It might be mono."
"Like you'd know what mono looks like," her sister remarked. "I'm fine. All right. Stop worrying so much." Lisa was still in her PJ's, and slouchy hoodie from school. Ellie had never seen her sister this non fashion conscious. It was as if she didn't want anyone to know the shape of her body. Ellie just hoped she was wrong about the other thought running through her head. No, her sister wouldn't do anything that foolish, would she?
"Get some rest." Ellie didn't know what else to say. Thankfully, the phone rang and Lisa picked up. She then handed it over to Ellie.
"Its for you."
Ellie's eyes opened wide. The last time she'd been on the house phone with anyone it had been with Rex and she thought her stomach might turn a flip, thinking he was calling again.
It was Nick. Her eyes even got wider.
"Nick," she croaked. "What's up?" Then she felt foolish for saying that.
"Um, just checking to see if you were OK," Nick said. "I just didn't know how you'd take the whole Leia freak show. I'm really sorry about that. I'm not even speaking to her after that drama production."
"I'm sorry, she just gets carried away." Ellie sighed and plopped herself on the couch.
"Tell me about it," Nick said. "She has issues."
"But I thought things were really good with you two." Ellie mentioned.
"Yeah, I guess it looked that way," Nick replied. "But we always had to do everything she wanted to do, you know. It was like I didn't count for anything. Really, I had no idea what I was getting into. I just kept hoping she'd think of me for a change."
"I don't know," Ellie teased. "You two looked pretty cozy there." She leaned back with her head hanging off the couch. She stared straight at the ceiling.
"It was all show."
"Really?" That was a surprise to Ellie who'd thought Leia was so much more into the relationship stuff than anyone she knew. "I always thought Leia was, you know, knew everything guys wanted." She felt herself blush wondering why she'd said so much to him in this conversation.
"She's a drama queen."
"I'm sorry things didn't work out."
"Don't be," Nick said. "Listen, you doing anything Friday night?"
"I can't." She would be smart about this. "I'm seeing someone."
"Who?"
"He doesn't go to our school." She couldn't help herself but make Kyle sound a little mysterious.
"I still might know him?"
"You don't." She kept listening to herself inside her head, please stop asking so many questions. "Look, I gotta go." She turned herself right side up then. This was so freaky, she thought. Nick asking her out. Was there just something in the air, or was he serious about wanting to go out with her?
