dust in the wind

"Its going to be a hot one," Aunt Maggie was looking out the front porch. She noticed the trail of dust coming in the wind toward the house. "Don't know this one, Ellie." She said quietly.

"What?" Ellie edge by the window to look out. She was in her cutoffs and barefooted. She wore a tank top under the smock apron that touched the tip of her cutoffs. Aunt Maggie hadn't asked her yet to get dressed, but then Aunt Maggie was giving her the look over at the moment. She fumed slightly but didn't say anything. She went back to the kitchen for another cup of coffee.

Ellie stood there watching. Her hair was a wreck. It didn't want to do anything. Her fringe bangs wouldn't do much but stick out the front of her head. She pulled the rest into a ponytail. She looked something frightful from the eighties. She wasn't wearing make up, either. She hadn't even put on any moisturizer for the day.

She watched the trail of dust go one way, then come back the other. She supposed someone was lost. But then the pickup truck headed up their road. Ellie kept staring. It looked familiar. The pick-up truck.

It couldn't be, she thought. A chill came over her as she waited. And then she saw him get out of the pick up. She backed away. Her teeth clinched. She needed to get a hold of herself as she licked her dry lips. If only she could take off running, she couldn't even find her flip-flops.
