shake off the dust

                                                                      We ♥ It

Elliot couldn't take another phone call from his Mom. He knew what she'd say. She wanted him to get out of this with Amanda. She wanted him to divorce her. He knew his Mom had never really liked her, but she'd been really quiet about it, until now. Now that Amanda had this problem with Evan.

"Why would you want to be with someone, who can't even take care of her children?" Her words were harsh. He didn't want to hear his mother judgement, but then it was her way of caring about him, too. He tried to remember that, even so, he hated to hear his Mom say such things about her.

"Mom," What was he to say? "I can't. I have to stay by her side. You don't know everything." And she didn't. He knew Amanda was a good person, and it wasn't fair to write her off like that. So, she was young, it was all so overwhelming. It wasn't like he was in any hurry to have his own family with her. He just wanted the two of them to start an adventure of their own, and maybe some day they'd sit around a table with their own kids telling them about this trip or that time he thought he lost their mother at the flea market, or how they went to an all day concert and were completely sunburned. Yes, he saw kids in the future, but not right now. He just wanted to have a chance with Amanda. "I love her."

What did he have to do, to make it true? It felt like an uphill battle.

Was it because they didn't look like a couple? Did he not do enough? So many things spun in his mind as he tried to do a little cooking now, but he cut himself peeling potatoes. He knew how it was in his own family. His mom always did the cooking. She always waited on his Dad. It didn't have to be that way? He didn't expect that out Amanda. And yet, he wondered if he had expected too much out of her.

He thought of how she'd said nothing about being in labor with Evan that evening. How she'd made him steak, baked potato and a salad. He felt so selfish now. But he'd been there for her when she came home with Evan. He did try to make her French toast which was chard and yucky. Well, he'd given lots of back rubs. That had to count for something.

He thought he knew her, but what if he didn't? Would he ever know her, for sure? He sucked the blood from his finger. He hated being alone. He just hoped Amanda wouldn't decide they'd be over too.

  1. I do feel sad for him. But he is doing the right thing. I'm glad he's telling his Mom where he stands in all of this.

  6. Sometimes you have to go with your gut feeling as opposed to listening to your parents. I like that he's willing to stick up for Amanda; despite everything that has happened. :)

  10. His mom sounds pretty harsh and with that cut on his finger it is not turning out to be a good day.
