the heat of summer

                                                       We ♥ It

Lon was getting the impression that everyone knew something but him. He didn't know what it could be.

He was out back grilling burgers. They were having their first cookout of the season. First real dinner party, in fact. They'd invited everyone over for some grub. Olivia brought Ravi. Eric had his brother Ian with him along with Syd and the baby. They were waiting on Roger who may or may not come with someone.

"What?" Lon asked as if Roger was going to tell them some news of some kind when he brought the burgers to where they were dining. As it was the whole thing with Ellie's cousin had been half forgotten. He was at the point of letting it go. He wanted too. He knew he'd upset Ellie about it even if she never brought it up, again.

"Nothing." Olivia smiled and she took the plate of burgers from him, took one and passed the platter around at the table. As it was, Ellie was off taking care of Charlie. At least, Charlie was better now after being at daycare every day.

"Well, I did hear something." Eric looked at Olivia who gave him the eye to be quiet.

"Did you?" Lon wondered if they knew this whole thing about Ellie's cousin and him. The maybe news, he liked to think. Maybe. Maybe he didn't have a daughter. "Like what?"

"Its Roger." Syd suddenly said. "He has a boyfriend."

"Oh." He wanted to be mute on the subject. About that time, Roger showed up with a guy.

Olivia cleared her throat. She acted as if she didn't notice.

Finally, everyone was settled. Even Ellie had a plate and Charlie was nibbling on whatever she gave him to play with on his tray in the high chair. Actually, Lon was amazed at Charlie's very nice behavior.

"Well, aren't you going tell us?" Roger then looked at Ellie.

She gritted a smile.

"Whats he talking about, Ellie?" Lon looked at her.

"Its nothing. Really." She didn't smile.

"Its something, all right." Roger grinned.

"Yeah, but we don't know if its true or not." Eric shrugged.

"What's true?" Lon winced.

"I'm-I'm pregnant." She barely breathed out.

Lon thought he might pass out. He couldn't believe it. He looked at  her wondering why he was the last to know.
