in the rhythem of things

"You are going to get me in so much trouble with Mandy!" Elliot was sure if it now. All Amanda's little brother did was play that guitar or whatever and video games.

"Relax, don't pay her any mind." Derrick laughed it off. "She's always like that, you know. Always. Nothing changes with her."

But as Elliot looked at Derrick, he was pretty sure Derrick was the one not changing.

"How were your grades this year?" Didn't Amanda's older brother, Dan care? He did have their parents house.

"You know." Derrick gave him a playful shrug.

"Did you pass anything this year?"

"Well, yeah, I passed. Just D's." Derrick made it sound as if he had to do it that way since his first name started with a D.

"What?" Elliot glared at him. He was beginning to think Derrick should be with them instead of Dan. He'd put his foot down about him doing more than just music.

Derrick just laughed and went back to jamming alone in the garage.

Elliot shook his head and went inside.

"I see what you mean." Elliot sighed.

"What?" Amanda had Charity working on a puzzle.

"Your brother. He's going to waste his life away, messing around on-"

"He wants to quit school when he's 16. That is if his band takes off." She told him.

"Oh, God. You're gonna stop him, aren't you?" Elliot knew this was serious.

"Yeah, when has he ever listened to me?" Amanda looked at Elliot.

"We gotta do something." Elliot hugged himself, deep in thought.

"Good luck on that one." Amanda shrugged. She was getting a picnic basket ready for the park that they could walk too.

"Well, he's going to the park and maybe even the library. His times up, out there. He needs to be doing other things. He needs some sun." Elliot nodded. This parenting was so much harder than he imagined.
