sweet

It was the best day ever. Ian aced his driver's test. Although, it would take 3 weeks or so to get it in the mail. But still, he had his temporary license. And Eric along with Syd and the baby came over to celebrate his birthday. It was great. Eric's Mom made him his favorite pasta and bought him a huge cake with a race car on it. Chances were it was the only car he was getting anytime soon.

And she let him have wine. Granted, it was watered down with ginger ale, but she let him celebrate as if he were one of the grownups now. He couldn't believe it. All this on his birthday. Syd made him a sweater. Eric gave him a gift certificate to his favorite book store. His Dad got him a couple of video games. He was set. No complaints. Just pleasantly surprised that it was so great. And of course, celebrating.

Everyone had turned in early. Of course, he didn't want to know what that was about. Dad seemed pretty happy with Eric's Mom these days. Ian would make sure he had his mp3 player plugged in his ears so he wouldn't have to listen. But before he could get settled in his room to do that, there was a tap on the door. It had to be after 10:30 p.m.

It was Kayla. Ian gave her a foolish grin. After-all, he was still a bit intoxicated.

"What are you doing here?" He whispered, almost falling on her.

"Its your birthday." She had a gift bag for him. It was mainly socks and candy.

"Sweet." He just grinned, taking it from her.

"I got a job." She smiled.

"Really?" He was still all grins, yet he hoped this didn't mean she'd be leaving the library.

"I got on fulltime. The head of circulation is retiring." She grinned more.

"Are you serious!" He hadn't meant to yell. But he gave her a hug, wanting to jump for joy. It was even more satisfying to see that she'd hugged him back, too.

"Can you go out?" She wanted to know.

"Don't see whats stopping me." He laughed, but tried to stay hush hush. "Oh, just a minute." There was a bottle of wine left. It had just been opened. "We should celebrate." He said very sneaky, taking the wine with them.

So they went down to her car, where they sat for a bit.

"I'm gonna have my own apartment and..."

"And you'll let me come over." He thought that was the funniest thing. Finally, he was quiet. He looked around outside. "Why aren't we moving?"

"Oh." So she started to drive then and Ian sat their calmly.

"Where are we going?" He then looked at her. "Do you have the apartment yet?"

"Not yet." She shrugged. They were in the car for quite a bit until she drove down to the park by the river. Ian just smiled.

"I always wanted to come here with someone." He held on to the wine as if it were his baby. She got out an old quilt from the trunk.

"Where did that come from?" He wondered if she'd planned this.

"I always carry it around in the winter, in case of bad weather. I just forgot to take it out." She told him.

Ian just nodded, knowing he was just getting his hopes up. There would be nothing funny about this. Kayla was as serious as always. He helped with the quilt down the slope by the river. It was warm and muggy in the moonlight. Finally, Ian cracked open the merlot and took a sip. It was more sour than he liked, but it still had the effect that he needed. She sat next to him, and he handed it over for her take a drink from the bottle.

"Sorry, I couldn't get glasses." He shrugged.

"For what? Its dark out here, anyway." She laughed. Ian cracked up. This was so hilarious. He drank more. So did she. Next thing he knew he was laying there with her under the stars, watching the fireflies whiz by as if they were stars about.

"I'm glad you wanted to celebrate with me." He found himself laughing for no reason. She laughed too. He drank a few more sips and let her have some to. Finally, he finished it off and threw the bottle in the river.

"We should have sent a message to someone." She then giggled.

"Message?" What would she have written, he thought. Probably a novel, no doubt.

"Message in a bottle." She sounded sentimental then. As if they needed to mark the occasion.

"Oh." He decided to kiss her, instead of wondering how to get the bottle back and write a message. This was so much easier. He touched her neck. His fingers fell through her silky hair. It was heavenly. She was kissing him too. And it was wild. He didn't want it to stop. He wanted to be lost in her. It was the best birthday ever.
