withering the storm

Amber supposed the place was becoming a home. There was more room than she thought. But it was just a room. A big room. Kyle had petitioned off part of it for their bedroom and a space for Rosie. Amber was looking forward to seeing her, yet not.

"How is this going to work, again?" Amber was sure she knew, but it might help to go over this one more time. She'd made chicken salad sandwiches. It was like a picnic at home, perhaps. Although, she thought of where she grew up and how she missed her Mom. Her Dad too. She was a bit homesick.

"Well, we're getting Rosie back. I got on as an electrician with that new development just out of town. I guess it'll be you and Rosie and Hilda." That was Olivia's great Aunt's name. "You said you'd do some housekeeping for her."

"I know." She sighed about that. It was definitely not the summer she imagined. She had wanted to travel. She didn't know where. But it was definitely not going to happen now. She knew it wasn't Kyle's fault, and she loved Rosie. She really did, but this was so final.

"Look, you and Rosie will handle Hilda. She likes both of you." Kyle reached for Amber's hand then. "And when you start classes, then Rosie can go to daycare."

Amber nodded. She wasn't hungry though. Really, shouldn't they be making as much time as they had for each other, before Rosie got here? She looked around. It might as well have been a little house on the prairie. She wondered if her ideas swimming in her head about Kyle were romantic. She grinned then. Of course, they were.

  2. Well you have to start somewhere, and decorating one room is way easier than a huge house!

  5. Hope things end up working out for Amber. I don't think she sees Rosie as an obstacle more than just another responsibility that she couldn't handle, though she is doing her best day to day.
