not to be bitter

This was really going to happen. The dinner. Liz knew she had to say yes to Syd's invitation. She'd never hear the end of this otherwise, but if Syd saw her, she'd know something was up.

Was it all of Munro's cooking that was making her fat? Of course, it wasn't. She'd just say it was. Leave it at that.

"Can I bring someone?" Liz asked Syd over the phone. She was home and Munro was in the kitchen making Alfredo sauce.

"Of course." Syd sounded happy about it.

Liz wanted to tell her not to judge her. She knew her sister did. They would probably think she could have done better than with Munro, but really he was the sweetest, and she'd learned to appreciate him. She liked being with him. And he didn't really seem to mind so much about her problem.

Liz had to tell her it was going to be a nice dinner. Splendid, in fact. She didn't want to mess this up. She'd messed up enough as it was.
