nobody said it would be easy

When the reporter asked Derrick about the fire a few days later, he didn't want her to exactly know that he was kind of a creep. A peeper, perhaps.

"Well, you know, I could see flames from..the street." It was a bit murky. He'd crashed into a window and Violet wasn't exactly cooperating. She was just so damn fascinated about that fire at her feet. He didn't know how he exactly got her out. He just did. Maybe he was Superboy. True, he'd never been that gallant in any sport. He was always the last on the cross country trail. A lot of times, he'd take a smoke break or even go out of his way to the Cum&Go for a Slurpee. He'd been vague with all his answers. Fuck, did they think he started the fire? Couldn't they be happy he saved these people and let it go at that? What did they want from him?

Everyone was expecting something out of him. He'd already been told he'd get an award at the school for his bravery. Derrick didn't really smile when the principal told him this.

"See, how good you are?" Amanda made over him the week afterward. Always making his favorite foods, letting him stay up late to play video games. Yeah, this was paying off, being there at the right time.

Of course, Amy's house was a lost cause. He was sad about that. Her dad was still in the hospital. They found out he had pneumonia and then a brain infection. It was all so scary. But at least, Ian, had Amy all to himself. She was staying at his place.

"Yeah, but I have to sleep on the couch." Ian reminded Derrick when Ian chilled out with him after school while Amy was meeting her Mom.

"So do you want to sleep with her?" Derrick smirked as if it were a joke. Maybe to get Ian's reaction.

"Like she needs that right now." Ian winced, but he did complain how his back hurt. The couch wasn't exactly perfect.

"How long do you think she'll be with you guys?" Derrick was interested.

"Dunno." Ian was afraid to ask. "At this rate, I'll be on that couch for months."

Derrick just nodded and tried to forget everything, by killing the bad guys on a military video game. He guessed nobody's life was perfect. He was certainly not the perfect hero.

  2. I hope Amy won't stress Ian too much.

    Derrick's sort of an anti-hero.

  3. Ian sounds like he's got his work cut out for him. Funny about Derrick getting an award at school.
