i don't want to be your favorite enemy

"Do you like Vampire Weekend?" Derrick asked Ian point blank while they were in Derrick's room. He guessed they were talking, again. "You don't think they're too gay?"

"Why does it really matter if they're gay or not?" Ian looked around Derrick's growing mess. "They're all right." He shrugged. He looked back at Derrick then who was digging for a video game his brother had let him borrow. It was under a mess of dirty clothes. "What have you been doing in here?"

"What does it look like?" Derrick gave him his endearing smirk. "I don't care. Nobody's coming over. Its not like I have to please Martha Stewart." As it was Amanda avoided his room as much as possible.

"Don't you want to help out your sister? Don't you want her to trust you?" Ian looked at him blankly.

"What do I care? She's got you." He half laughed. He knew he was getting annoying, but it was best to be this than depressed, and he was that. He guessed he wasn't letting it show.

"Look, don't you want her to trust you, with Rosie?" Ian started finding some books that were overdue at the library.

"It would just mean." He gritted. "I'd have to watch her all the time, and..and why should I? So-so she could have more time with her other boyfriend?"

"Asa is a nice guy." Ian grinned. "He's already got a winter reading program started up. And he did that in the first 8 hours he started at the library."

"You'd think that, wouldn't you? A nice guy." Derrick made no effort to smile. Why did some people just luck out, completely? "I guess you and Amy are gonna be reunited during winter break."

"I dunno. She's a little pissed with me, because I told her I'd be working." Ian held on to the Dorian Gray graphic novels as if they might be a barrier between them.

"Oh." Derrick didn't want to be downer. "Uh, this old dude next door said he'd pay me fifty bucks a week if I walked his dog, everyday." Derrick shrugged as if their might be hope for him during the lonely winter.

"Are you?" Ian wondered.

"I guess so." Although, he hadn't told him for sure. He looked at the bed that only left a tiny corner for him to sleep in. "You gonna help me clean this shit hole or what?"

Ian just smiled. "Sure."

  2. It really is true that some people do seem to have everything work out for them and everyone automatically likes them -- poor Derrick as this is the case with Asa!
