in the wind

It didn't really bother Kyle that it might be a blizzard. He called Amber's parents.

After he listened to Amber cry for about fifteen minutes as she told him what was going on with Roger, it was as if a whole new person inside him had been born. He was seething bitterness.

But he acted all calm when he got off the phone. No, he wasn't going to go after her. He thought about it, at first. Hadn't he invested an awful long time to this relationship? He didn't question her about what he hadn't nor had given her. Perhaps it was like snapping the umbilical cord. The pain was fresh as if his sense of being had been ripped from under his skin.

"What are you going to do?" Ellie was the first to ask.

"I need to go home." He nodded as if he had something to do.

"What happened with Amber?" Ellie had the baby on her shoulder, and Charlie was hanging on to her leg. He was wanting a snack.

"She's fine." Kyle guessed Amber would be. "It'll all be fine."

"I don't think you should go." Ellie told him as she had her hand on the back of Zoe's blonde fuzzy head.

"Well, I'm going. You guys take care of Rosie for me." Kyle was certain, he could do this. He would. Ellie went to get Lon.

"Kyle!" Lon rushed in as Kyle was bundling up to go. "Are you insane! You are not going anywhere." Lon grabbed him by the arm. "You want me and your brother to hog tie you?"

Kyle swelled a frown. Lon got him in the kitchen.

"What ever it is? Has to wait." Lon told him. "Its not worth it, getting yourself killed.. out in a blizzard. Its zero visibility out there. You have to stay."

It was dark and dreary inside, but a white dust blew about outside. Really, Kyle hadn't even looked. Now that he did, all he could think of... was sleep. It was a soft white that just kept whipping the branches. Yes, it was an odd time, Kyle guessed.

But Kyle was bitter. He just wanted to obliterate someone, and he wasn't here.

"Roger's been messing around with Amber." Kyle let slip.

"Roger?" Lon squinted hard.

Kyle nodded. He was ready to explode in anger.

"Just simmer down. All right. You gotta let it go. Remember it takes two. I know he's a shitty friend. But this is not a good time for you to go. Even if the weather were just dandy, you still have to let this sink in." Lon pushed him into a kitchen chair.

Kyle hugged himself staring at Lon's old work boots. About then, Sam was at the doorway.

"What's going on?" Sam looked over at Kyle.

"Amber broke up with Kyle." Lon kept watching Kyle though.

"She did it over the phone? Jesus, did she text you?" Sam wanted to know as he came over to Kyle.

"Maybe, I wished she had." Kyle said ever so quietly.

"You think you can stay with him, through the night?" Lon asked Sam. "Make sure he won't take off to Roger's?"

"Roger's?" Sam winced as he scratched the back of his head. "Damn, he's such a little weasel."

Hannah came in to tell Lon. "Its a snow day tomorrow. I just found out on the TV!" She was bubbling with excitement.

  3. I am glad Kyle has someone to turn to, during all this. A storm inside him as well as outside, too.
