Olivia gave Roger the third degree when she found him, after Doyle gave him his black eye. How could he have broken up Amber and Kyle? She told him if he wanted to make any amends that he better find Amber quick. Of course, she didn't tell him what to say or do. She left it at that. Told him that she'd heard Kyle say Amber was going to her parents. She'd given him directions. He guessed. Olivia was Amber's best friend.
So there he was, a little sullen, wondering how to apologize. He could tell he'd freaked out Amber when she saw his bruised face.
He shook his head, no. "It was Doyle." He should have expected it, but he really he didn't. Funny, he had no idea he could ever make Doyle that mad. This was turning out all bad. He wondered now how he could have kept it up. Years?
He felt so out of it now. Like the momentum was gone. It was all so sad. This mayhem he'd created because..because..he was bored...he guessed.
"We need to talk." He sighed.
She shook her head, no.
"Please." He felt helpless. "Everyone hates me now. And, and I can't stand it, if you hate me too."
Amber waited until her mother went off down the hall and shut the door behind her.
"You knew, it wasn't going anywhere with Kyle." He couldn't help but say. "You needed me and much as I needed you." It was the truth. That's the way he saw it. Now.
"Why are you here?" She looked as if she might spit on him.
"Because." Roger pressed his lips tight. He had to think. What could he say? "I don't want to lose you. I want..I want to make this work. If you'll let me."
Amber sucked in a breath.
"How can I trust you?" She shook her head, no. "How can I trust me?"
He took her hands. He felt the weight of her fingers. It was a good weight. Roger knew he could do this. "Lets..lets just give it a month..and if its not, what it should be. Then, we can decide."
He had no idea what her answer might be. Finally, she nodded.
