turning another corner

"Why can't I just do spaghetti and meatballs?" Asa reminded Amanda that was a pretty simple thing to do.

"That's not a bad idea." She looked at him as to why hadn't she thought of that.

They still hadn't moved into the bedroom yet. Maybe by the weekend. As it was, she was half asleep on his chest on the livingroom couch while the ten o'clock news was on.

"I don't know why you want to even bother." Asa combed her hair with his fingers.

"I probably shouldn't, but I have to." She told him.

"All right. You don't need to worry so much about it. We'll have people over. It'll be a spaghetti dinner. Just don't over do it. OK?" Asa had Rosie practically in his lap too. It was good thing he'd fed them early, but as it was, his leg was going to sleep, he wasn't sure how much longer he could have Amanda laying all over him.

"Uh-huh." He thought he heard her say.

"Come on." He had to get them off of him. "Time for bed. Both of you." He had to push Rosie along. He brushed her teeth even if she were half asleep. After he got her into bed, it was back to getting Amanda to bed. She was mumbling how it wouldn't be long until school was out. Asa really wished they could wait on this little house warming party. It could be the first party of the summer. But Amanda was set on having this potluck, immediately.

Finally, it was time to check to see if everything was locked up. Just then his cell rang. It was Rachel. He couldn't imagine why she was calling.

"Its not about church," she said first thing.

"OK." He didn't hang up on her. He was waiting for her to tell him how he was going to hell, but she didn't say that either.

"Do you..do you know Sam?" She asked.

"Um, kind of." But he didn't know him really. "Elliot's friend?"

"Yeah, he works at the school." Rachel told him.

"Sounds like you know him better than I do, already." He smiled.

"Well, I was thinking." She was quiet then. "Maybe you could help me."

"Help you?" He winced. This was the girl he could hardly stand. It had felt practically like an arranged marriage when he first got here. Maybe that's why he hadn't wanted to know her.

"I want to ask him out, but I don't know what ...I should say." She sighed. "Do you think I should even try?"

"Sure you should, if you want to go out with him." Asa was a little shocked about this conversation. He was sure she spent every night at the church or in some bible study, arguing about the bible.

"I don't want anyone to know about this." Rachel told him. "I mean, at church.  I want to.. just go do something..without everyone's approval. You know, dinner and a movie. Or..or just a movie."

"When is the last time you've gone to a movie?" Asa asked.

"Never. Not at a movie theater." She told him.

Suddenly, Asa felt terrible than he'd treated her so unkind. He'd never thought how her life was. He always thought she'd been brain washed and happy, but maybe she wasn't.
