out of nowhere
It stung Roger that no one had called him while he was away. He had to wonder if the house blew away, would they even call?
"They're mad at me." He finally confessed to his mother. Of course, she assured him it would pass. In the next breath she was talking about Amber and wished she'd met her.
"And Olivia liked her, you said?" His Mom was more concerned of Olivia's approval than anything else. Still he felt out of place at her home with the baby and his step-sister. His mother was busy with the house. He just remembered her always off at work when he was little. Business trips. She was always busy. Just a different kind of busy now.
"Mom, I don't want to talk about Olivia." The more she spoke of Olivia, she made him feel he'd lost the only good thing that had ever happened to him.
"Do you miss her?" Her mother asked while she was getting cookies out of the oven. She was making him goodies for his trip home.
"Who?" Roger winced.
"Olivia." By the sound of it, he knew his mother did. As if that would make his mother feel happy for him if he managed to find someone as good as Olivia.
"Mom, we still live in the same house. No, I don't miss her, at all." Roger squinted harder as if his mom didn't understand him at all.
"Since it didn't work out with Amber, are..are you wanting a boyfriend, now?" His mother asked out of the blue.
"MOM!" Roger was getting testy.
"Just think about it. Look at your relationships. What's missing, Roger?" His mother kept a steady eye on him. Roger turned from her. He didn't have an answer for her. He nursed his upper lip. He had no idea what was missing. Maybe if he could just take home his Mom's dog, would be all he needed, but he didn't see that happening, either.
