father to father
"I can't tell you how proud I am of you, son." Elliot's dad, Luke couldn't stop talking about the news. It was as if Pearl didn't even exist. "I sure hope its a boy."
"Well, Dad, I'm hoping for a healthy baby." Elliot didn't have to have a son. He and his Dad were cleaning up while Penelope and his mother were busy with Pearl. They'd bought Pearl a new outfit and of course, his mother wanted to see Pearl in it. They were off in the baby's room.
"Look, I need to talk to you, about something." His dad wasn't talking about them finding a bigger place which sort of shocked Elliot. His mother never let up.
"OK." Elliot rinsed a dish and left it in the drainer. Elliot was giving him his full attention.
"I didn't name that accordion because I like the name Heidi." He pressed his lips tight.
"OK." Elliot never had odd conversations with his Dad. This was a first. Elliot focused on his father's eyes.
"I..I knew someone named Heidi, in Germany, and..and she gave me the accordion." He told him then.
"OK." Elliot wasn't sure what else to say.
"Can you stop being OK, with everything? Because I know you won't be OK with what I'm about to say." His Dad sounded so certain. He looked back to see if anyone could hear them from the kitchen. "Someone has been looking for me on FACEBOOK." His father glared at him. "You have a sister, Elliot."
"What?" Elliot almost broke a dish in the sink then. "What do you mean?"
"I can't deny it. I wasn't really sure, but I'm pretty sure its true. I have a daughter with Heidi." He nodded then.
"Well, who is she?" Elliot winced.
But his mother was coming, and his dad shook his head, no as if this was not the time to ask.
Elliot did his best to go on with the dishes, but he wasn't sure if he should be happy about this, or angry with his Dad, from keeping this from him.
