just a few loose screws

Audrey knew it now. Aidan was the only one who really listened to her.

It was so strange meeting him at the library. How did she not know that Henry was Aidan's little brother. She should have remembered, but it was so long since she'd seen him. Even then, he was the guy who already had a girlfriend. He was attached at the hip to Elaine.

Audrey met him the first week of college. It was a party, and she'd never drank, nor smoked nor anything else, back then.

She was a psychology major. Her plan was to be a social worker, some day. Aidan wanted to go into government. Maybe law school. What ever he did would be fabulous, or so he acted like it then. But he was a funny guy who laughed at everything, going on, and they hung out. But usually, she was the fifth wheel. Audrey never had a boyfriend. Actually, she had several, but it didn't exactly look like it. There was the boy she hung out with breakfast. Then the guy in the drama department that she talked to between classes. And of course, Harvey the big football dude who always ate lunch with her. By the time classes were over, she'd go back to the dorm and watch General Hospital with Aidan. Yes, her favorite moments the first semester of college.

When Audrey looked back to those freshman days, she felt as if she'd been a different person. Actually, she felt as if she were a different person to her daily dose of each guy, she hung out with. It was amusing, yet she wasn't like the other girls who already knew what they wanted. For the most part she was watching the world go by and of course, studying like it was no tomorrow.

Why couldn't she be like that now?

Aidan was great to see again. Especially, after getting the third degree from Kayla who warned her that her days were numbered at the library. It was a lot to think about. She didn't want to go home. She knew she was a burden to her parents. And maybe she'd made a lot of mistakes in her life.

Possibly, hooking up with Topher wasn't the way to go. Yes, she'd slipped back into her old ways. But not entirely.  Kayla didn't know she was sleeping in hallways and washing up at MacDonald's. Audrey wasn't using drugs. If only she had a place close to the library.

"But I can't find an apartment I can afford." Audrey said  after her third cup of coffee at the diner across the street from the library. It felt like old times. She wanted to keep talking to Aidan "Maybe I should work here too?" Audrey smiled as if that would be a nice dream. "You, at least have your driver's license." She reminded Aidan. It was true they were both down on their luck.

"I still can't believe she left me, after all this time." Aidan was still stuck on Elaine, who had a well paying job at a pharmaceutical company. He could only talk of his world.

She could tell he was possibly worse off, than her.

"I took all these pills, I don't even know all the names of..and I..honestly..didn't even know I was trying to kill myself. I didn't even know." He gritted as he held on to his cup. "She cheated on me, Audrey."

Audrey reached over and took his hand. "I guess we'll have to make some lemonade." She said ever so softly. Evidently, that was the trick. Because she was with Aidan now. And he lived only a  block away from the library. Life was good.
