a bit player

Josie was sort of glad she didn't get to see Derrick right away. She wanted to pick a fight with him, but now she'd simmered down. She'd had some down time with Willow at work and they were making plans to go places together. Willow knew of a yarn shop that Josie always wanted to go too.

She'd just gotten home from her shift and here Derrick was in the kitchen frying up bacon. She walked past and said nothing. She went straight to her room, hoping her mother hadn't called. She didn't even want to check her phone. Luckily, just a text from Ian. It was something that made her smile, but she didn't want to share it with anyone.

She laid down in her sleeveless summer maternity dress and yawned, listening carefully to Derrick get his sandwich made. He was eating soon enough. Even listening to him eat was horrible. He was like a bad brother now. The one she wished she could scream at, for no reason. Of course, she had her reasons. She gritted then, thinking of all the bad things she wanted to say to Derrick. She knew he'd blame this all on her. He was like that.

A tap came to her door, but he didn't wait for her to answer. Instead, he cracked open the door. "Sorry, if I upset, you, other night." He looked at her waiting for some apology accepted signal, but she sighed instead.

"Look, just ..just tell me..you're not having sex with Ian." Derrick stood in the doorway.

"But what if I am?" Josie was honest as she rose up on her elbows.

"Are you crazy!" Now it was as if she'd turned on the switch, to make him a mad man as he came in her room.

"This isn't about you." She stood up.

"Well..I think it is." He shot right back, eyeballing her.

"God, you would..wouldn't you?" Josie crossed her arms and rolled her eyes as she watched him, thinking this  might be a manic episode. She might have to call 911 if he didn't back off. He was closer than she felt comfortable with. In her face.

"I don't think you care about the baby!" He yelled then. "Maybe, I'm the only one that does!"

"Yeah, right. You don't care ..what happens!" She snapped. "Maybe its a good thing, we aren't keeping it." Josie glared right back.

Derrick's frown swelled as if she meant to hurt him.

"What are you going to do? You know, when the baby gets here?" Derrick asked now. They hadn't wanted to know if the baby was a boy or a girl.

Josie only shrugged. The thought of being with him so long ago was like a faded dream that she hardly remembered. Now it was just anger.

"Yeah, you'll up and leave. Probably move away. What do you care?" He wasn't backing off.

Like a knee jerk reflex she kicked him in the crotch.

"I don't have to tell, you, anything!" She knew how to get him back. Even if it were unintentional. "That's for Henry and Ian, too!" She watched him flounder about. "Just go." She pushed him toward the door. They were done.

  3. Maybe that's why they avoided each other for so long, trying to avoid a fight.

  7. I'm sure emotions are all heightened and hormonal, as well. I was hoping he'd be more considerate. Yet, I'm sure he feels he is.
