the romance of science

Gilly watched Jonah stomp through the kitchen and slam the bedroom door shut.

"You, really get him, don't you?" He looked at Haley who was still holding on to the drawing she'd made for Jonah.

"Fickle, is more like it." She didn't seem to care that he was in a fit. She mixed in the artwork with the others, for the long lost scripts he'd been working on for his graphic novel. Haley cracked up. Her  laugh was a bit mysterious.

"I really think he likes you." Gilly's smile was sly. What else could it be? He knew for a fact Haley had her eye on him. She'd wanted to know every little detail about Jonah. He supposed that's why there were so many long chats and strolls in the mall and even picnics in the park. She wanted the low down on Jonah.

Haley thought he was funny.

"How long does he stay this way, after I leave?" She wanted to know.

"Oh, could be hours." Gilly was carrying around Tristan who drooled on him a bit, but Gilly didn't seemed to mind.

"What will you do? While he's away? Have a holiday?" Haley asked.

"No, of course, not. They put me to the grind, you know." He shrugged about work. Perhaps it would be awful quiet without Jonah around. He seemed fine, usually. But sometimes, Haley put Jonah in a mood. Of course, Gilly never put him on the spot about it.

"So you say, but I don't entirely believe you. You were texting someone when I got here. Who is it?" She looked him in the eye.

"No one, in particular." Gilly winced thinking it wasn't that noticeable. "Just someone I used to know." Fiona lived in the city now. They'd bumped into each other. It was just a bit of catching up. She was interested in what was happening to Oliver, these days. It wasn't until now that he knew what a crush she had on him. All this time, he figured it was Jules she'd want details about.

"You two, going out?" Haley got her art stuff together, but was taking her time.

"No." Gilly squinted hard. Fiona wasn't really on her own. She lived with an old Aunt, and she was still with the drugstore chain. They weren't exactly the jet set.

"I don't believe you." Haley teased.

"Well, try not to torment Jonah too much on this trip." Gilly reminded her as she was leaving.

"I just might." She was giddy about it.

Gilly sighed. If only Jonah could figure it out.
