a sad state of mind
"You don't have to stay." She assured him, but he parked in the multi-level car garage, and he went with her. He held her hand as if he wouldn't dare let her go in the dark, anywhere.
"I don't think Van will be there." She shrugged thinking he'd hate to be there, but the silence wore on as if he needed this silence to think.
Luna was in the waiting area of ICU. She wasn't even holding her iPhone.
"My phone died." She told her, giving Syreeta a hug.
"How is he?" Syreeta asked, looking at Luna who was in her slouchiest of slouch clothes without any makeup.
"At least, he's not in a coma." That sounded promising. "But he's not awake, either." She spoke of broken ribs and limbs. "He broke his neck."
Syreeta felt a wave of nauseous when Luna said this. She sat down with her friend. It was the least she could do.
"I can try to charge up your phone." Zac offered as if he'd give them some time alone. Luna nodded, handing over her phone. He said he would go to car. There might be something in the glove box he could use.
"You have like..the best boyfriend, ever." Luna told her.
"Thanks." Syreeta nodded, but it felt like a lie. Still, a little of it could be true. If she let herself believe it. He was different now. As if deep down, he needed her. Maybe it didn't really hurt that he was Fish's best friend.
"I didn't even know, Sunny and Holden..were..together." Syreeta said ever so softly wondering if she should have said it.
"Yeah, I guess..it was more than a fluke when she asked him to the Valentines dance. I thought she was trying to make Derrick jealous. Everyone, thought that." Luna tried to smile.
"Did Holden know?" Syreeta wondered.
"How come you never ever talked about Holden?" Syreeta didn't mean to sound angry, but weren't friends suppose to tell each other, everything?
"I guess..."Luna sighed so restlessly. "Peer pressure, maybe. It didn't seem like the right thing to do. I dunno." Luna looked so sad. "I don't want anything bad to happen to him, Ressie." She broke down. Syreeta put her arm around her and let her cry on her shoulder.
