like a frozen lake

Syreeta was certain the school should have closed. She didn't want to go to school. She felt so numb, but her skin pricked goosebumps. Maybe she needed to crawl under the covers to keep warm.

She really didn't know what to say or do. She wanted to stay in her room. Her bed was like an island as she set there fully clothed in yellow tights and pleated skirt. She donned her  Dr. WHO Tee under her raspberry cardigan.

She sat in disbelief. Maybe they were wrong. Maybe nothing had happened to Sunny Wilson.

Syreeta got a text.

It was from Luna. Her step-brother was in the hospital.

Syreeta looked at the text in a state of shock. She texted back asking if he was the one in the accident. She didn't even know Luna had a step-brother. Luna was suppose to be her best friend.

Luna finally confessed that yeah, the new guy was her step-brother. It was as if she was not proud of this fact.

Syreeta squinted wondering why Luna would be this way about Holden.

A tap came to her door.

"Come in." She was expecting Fish but it was Zac.

"Are you coming?" He told her Fish was already in the car. After all, she was alone in the house. Hadn't she heard the honking?

"Do I have to?" She didn't know if she could face the day. "I can't believe it happened."

"Its terrible. I know." He looked out of it, too. "I mean, I hated her, but..this..this wasn't something I wished."

She nodded. She knew what he meant. Sunny might not have been the nicest, sometimes.

"Just, tell Fish I'm sick." She frowned with disgust.

"No, you're fine. We'll be fine. We need to be there. Together." He put out his hand. She hesitated. With a sigh she took his hand. But she wasn't sure it would do her much good today.
