about that

"Seriously, Mom?" Audrey glared at her mother who was busy putting the store bought potato salad in a bowl. "How could you, invite her, over here?"

"She seems lonely. How come you two, aren't talking?" Her mom wanted to know as she was getting the serving dishes ready. The barbecue was still warming in the oven. Aidan brought the meat from work. He was off with Audrey's dad talking about golf.

"I can't." Audrey was doing very well, avoiding Kayla at work. "I'm..I'm giving her..her space." Actually, she was sure she'd find a reason to snap and tell Kayla all about her real family, and how she was her real sister.

"You're just making it worse." Her mother informed her.

"How? Just how am I, making it worse?" Audrey practically shouted, giving her mother the eye. She was still in her work clothes of a light Pollyanna attire of gingham. Except, Audrey felt as if she should go home, put on her sweats and eat the leftover chocolate chip mint ice cream and find Rosemary and Thyme to watch on Netflixs.

"Look, this is about Luc and Olivia." Odile glared right back, as if Audrey was ready to have a shouting match.

Audrey sucked in a breath.

Just then the doorbell rang. Kayla and Oliver arrived with the baby. Audrey gritted hard, trying to smile. Kayla came to the kitchen with some leftover muffins from Oliver's.

"Oh, you didn't have too." Naturally, her mother fluttered about while Audrey stared at Kayla.

"How's married life?" Kayla wanted to know.

"Good." Audrey really couldn't think of anything clever. "How's your married life?"

Kayla looked at her as if that were some sort of insult.

Odile went to check on the guys with the baby.

"You know, don't you?" Kayla eyeballed her.

"I-I," Audrey swallowed back, not sure what Kayla meant. "Um, I dunno."

"Who told you? Who told you the baby wasn't Oliver's?" Kayla kept staring at Audrey.

Now Audrey stared at Kayla.

"What are you talking about?" Audrey winced.

"You hate me, don't you?" Kayla's voice cracked. Audrey sensed a meltdown.

"I don't hate you." But evidently Kayla hated herself. "I did find out something. But..but it wasn't about ..that..it was about you. It was..." Audrey sighed, hoping to make this quick. "We're sisters. You're my sister." She couldn't help to want to break down, too. "But tonight is for Luc and..and lets..lets just be here for Luc, OK?"

  2. I think Audrey might be a bit cranky because of having to hold this secret for so long. Maybe it is good that it is out!
