mulling it over

"You, don't think she's having Duncan's baby, do you?" Asa even surprised himself at breakfast when he said it. Of course, the time he did see Camille and Duncan at the concert on the 4th, he really hadn't had a chance to say anything to them.

Camille was so happy to see Dylan. He and Jane looked at Duncan as if maybe he had a doppelganger. There was no way Camille could be living with him, but they soon found out he'd been at her place since January.

Jane squinted hard as she was putting his cup of coffee at the table for him.

"I dunno." She left it at that.

"I bet he wishes it was his." Asa took a sip of coffee. He thought of Joe then. Camille never mentioned him, but Derrick was living with them now. Josie was in England. At this rate, what if Josie never came back?

He looked at Dylan in his play pen. He was scooting about. It wouldn't be long until he'd be walking.

Dylan's grandmother was having a baby. The little revelation was finally kicking in.

"It really wasn't that awkward." Jane shrugged as she got out the heated egg burritos from the microwave.

Asa almost coughed a laughed. "We didn't exactly say anything."

"Yeah, and that's probably a good thing." She shrugged again as she served him and then set down with hers and started forking through it. "He's got Camille. He's not our problem."

"God, I hope he's not drinking." Asa sighed thinking this might be all his fault. Why had it taken  him so long to figure this out? He knew about Camille getting audio books for someone at the library. But he didn't know who.

"How would you feel? If..if I asked them to dinner, some time?" He wondered how Duncan would be. Honestly, he was more or less a sleepy old hound dog to Asa. But to Jane, Duncan might be one old mutt who couldn't learn any new tricks.

"Fine." She took a bite of her burrito so that would be her final answer.

He didn't want to put Jane through anything. Still, he wanted to know what was really going on with Camille.
