Mitch noticed a change in Derrick the moment he saw Daisy at the dance. It didn't help much when Daisy left and didn't come back.
"Its all my fault." Derrick really wasn't in the mood to dance nor anything else after that.
"Why is it your fault?" Mitch asked. They were alone now out in the moonlight of the parking light. Mitch kept thinking what a beautiful night it was for the stars and the perfect Autumn chill in the air. The perfect time for couples to be close, but he wasn't so sure if they were.
Mitch leaned further back on the trunk of the car while Derrick stewed about matters Mitch was sure he should leave alone.
"Its nothing really." Derrick pushed his hands deeper into the pockets of his black Dockers.
"It doesn't look like nothing." Mitch sighed.
"Max was so much better with Daisy. And..and she was so much better with him too. But..but.." He shook his head. "I sort of.."
"Sort of what?" Mitch didn't mean to press, but he didn't want Derrick to sugar coat it. "I sort of had a thing with Daisy." He nursed is bottom lip.
Mitch closed his eyes as if he should have known.
"Maybe, you, still do." Mitch let slip.
"No. I don't." Derrick shook his head. "I really don't."
"OK." Mitch sighed thinking they'd never get very far. Why didn't he just give up? Move to L.A. like Jordy wanted and actually have some fun.
Mitch never knew Jordy could write such sincere letters and post cards. He never thought Jordy would miss him. Now Jordy considered Mitch his best friend. He e-mailed him once a day. Mitch was certain Jordy only considered him a biographer and hoped he'd someday publish all those letters if he made it big. Of course, Jordy could care less what was really going on with him, and especially Derrick.
Jordy's question remained. When are you going to get over Derrick?
"Just tell me what happened?" Mitch was so sure he really didn't wanted to know, but it might make Derrick feel better if he told him. Mitch would do his best to understand. "You know, you can tell me anything." After all, he knew all about Ian and Josie..then Henry and Dorian too.
Seriously, Mitch felt some days... he had no life at all. Maybe he was the ghost of a boyfriend.
