where can we go

Where Can We Go

Josie still found herself apologizing to Dean. She wished she hadn't on the night of the dance, but she couldn't keep her mouth shut about it.

"I just want you to know..I do believe you. I do." She hated that she'd doubted him. "Its just..I should have never believed a thing Gage ever said. He's such a liar." It was mistake she now knew, talking about it, again, when they should have been out just enjoying the moment on the dance floor where it was warm and so inviting, compared to the backseat of her cold car on an icy February night. But they were close and their warmth was dreamy.

"How long do we have to keep going over this?" He looked torn. Like their was some mysterious loyalty to Gage.

"I just don't know why you keep taking up for Gage? Why? He's evil." There she'd said it. There was something just not right about him.

Dean shook his head, but she touched his face, any way to bring him near even if he pulled away.

"You, wouldn't understand." He winced as if it pained him to even talk about it.

"But I want to. I do." How could she make it anymore clear? "I'm on your side. Its just..I don't want him to hurt you."

"He's not going to hurt me." He squinted hard as if he were frustrated with all her talk of Gage. She just knew Gage was involved with Halie even if she'd been very aloof about everything with Gage.

"How? How do you know, this?"

"God. Why do you..care?" He looked at her as if she should shut up with the questions. But his bark was worse than his bite. She knew as she put her arm around him and got him to lay on her satiny dress.

"Because..because, I love you, and I need to know." She told him.

"Josie..." He didn't really fight her. Maybe it was the cold. Maybe it was the threat of being alone now, would be just too much. He rested his head on her lap. And suddenly it felt to her that she was his, after all. He did need someone to take care of him.

"Look, there was a fire. Where we lived. And yeah, I'm pretty sure he started it. But I dunno for sure. He..he was always fascinated with fire." When Dean said it, she remembered hearing on the news about the fire at the old abandoned church when Halie was missing. "But ..but he saved us. That has to count for something. Right?" Dean sighed then. "But he ran away, and got in some trouble. And..and they put him in juvie."

"He's a creep." Josie said under her breath.

"What?" Dean looked up at her. She imagined him when he was small and how adorable he must have been.

She hated the thought then of what she really wanted. She didn't want him to go into the Army. Josie wanted him to be with her. Always.
