a fine day for traveling

a fine day for traveling

It was a long hot summer.

Lola was sleepy and tired and her back hurt a little. For a while there, they really thought she was having triplets. But they'd finally made their way back to Nebraska.

There were moments, she imagined how the pioneers felt among the grassy valleys and hours of nothingness, but billboard towns. No, they didn't have those. Especially, those advertising casinos on Indian reservations.

It was all new to Ash who breathed it all in like he might sing a song about it. But he was quiet and she drove.

Yes, they had a new car. Paid and signed for by his dear friend Denny who was out in California. In the end, there was a change of plan. Ash and Lola thought about it long and hard, and Denny found a house. His TV teen show was a success. He hadn't left Darby behind after all.

Denny said it was the least he could do. Besides, Ash would always be family in his eyes and Lola, too.

But Lola and Ash were taking their time. Ash hadn't learned to drive yet. Lola wondered if they would even make the trip. But once she got to Iowa, she kept driving.

The first place she stopped was Daisy's. At least, Daisy was expecting her. Ash gave Daisy and hourly report in text. He text Denny and Darby. Lola knew Ash was on top of this expedition in his own way.

At the moment, Lola didn't even care if she saw her mom or not. Maybe it was just being pregnant, or the fact her mom was so moody the last time she saw her and she hadn't talked to her since.

But there was Daisy and Max with their baby, waiting for them. Of course, Lola waddled to the bathroom first thing. After a potty break, she flopped on the couch like a beached whale.

Ash was already holding their baby. He was all grins chatting it up with the both of them.

"Are you sure you're all right?" Daisy asked as she brought Lola a cold glass of water.

She only nodded propping her feet up on the coffee table.

"You, don't mind, do you?" Lola sighed as she wanted to put the cold water bottle on her head.

"No, of course not." Oh, Daisy was happy and wanted to know all about New York and where they were moving too.

"Ash knows more about it than I do." Really all, Lola wanted was a nice nap, but Daisy thought she might have a fever and her ankles were swelled..according to Daisy.

"They are?" Lola couldn't really get a good look at her ankles. She at least she wore her favorite TOMS, a gift from Ian when she told him she was pregnant.

Daisy got on the house phone with Lola's brother. She told him about her ankles and how she thought she should go to the emergency room.

"Are you serious?" Lola winced. What was Daisy going on about? She felt fine.

Now Ash looked nervous, giving Max the baby. He went to investigate her ankles.

"When was your last checkup?" Daisy wanted to know.

"A month or so ago." Of course, she'd gone to the free clinic. They suggested she try not to gain anymore weight, but other than that they said she was fine. She was fine.
