How's it gonna be

how's it gonna be

Leo didn't sleep a wink. He hoped he slept the whole way to New York City. After all, he wasn't in a good mood even if his mother made all his favorite breakfast items. Waffles, bacon, sausage and over easy eggs.

He couldn't eat.

"Are you all right, son?" His dad asked.

"Yeap." But he wanted to throw up. Go back to bed. Maybe go for a long walk and wait this out under the bleachers at the football stadium.

But the doorbell rang. Leo sighed, thinking why in the world would Sal be here so early. He didn't want to see him just yet.

Thankfully, it was Garvin and he was all smiles.

"Just thought you guys might like some pictures, before he leaves." Before Leo knew it, Garvin was taking candid snapshots.

"Oh, I'm in my housecoat." Leo's mother scurried them out of the kitchen. She'd have to get ready.

"Well, maybe Leo and I could..could take a walk." Garvin smiled and Leo liked the idea. For a moment he was full of happiness, but by the time they got out the door..Leo was in a slump.

"Oh, you don't need to be so nervous. You're gonna be fine." Garvin's warmth was more affectionate than Leo wanted to let on, but it felt good to be shoulder to shoulder with him, even if Garvin was playing around with his camera.

"I hope so." They walked up the street and then another block. It was quiet. Leo liked the idea of seeing the places he saw everyday on his way to school.

There was the empty little park. Leo hadn't been there since middle school. There were a grove of trees and a picnic table or two, close to the swing set, slide and merry-go-around.

Leo plopped into one of the swings as if this might be the last time he would ever be here. What if something happened to him in New York City? What if he never found his way back?

Garvin sat in the other swing and acted as if he was really going to swing, but he didn't. He sat there a little awkward.

Leo was on the verge of tears. He didn't know what was happening to him. He looked at Garvin, out of the corner of his eye. The next thing he knew, he was kissing Garvin. It was so true. It felt like the only thing left to do. Unspoken. Unbreakable.
