The sunshine was so bright. Lily was thankful there was no school the night after Halloween, but in her head, she didn't know where she was.
The room was all neat and neutral with a bare wooden floor and everything in various brown. She winced. She was at Barry's house. She'd never been in his guestroom before.
Naturally, she was the first one up, and she sneaked down the hall, just to find Barry under a comforter on the couch.
She winced. Wishing he was with Mommy. She wanted them together, like some episode of FRIENDS.
Lily sighed. What if Mommy wasn't here? Suddenly a chill took her by surprise.
"Where's Mommy?" She didn't want to tip-toe around anymore.
Barry yawned and stretched.
"She's still asleep." He winked to look at the clock behind her. "It's only 8, you know."
He yawned once more. "She had a very long night. We talked."
He nodded. He pulled back the comforter. He was in his sleep pants and a tank.
"How about pancakes?" He asked.
"OK." She shrugged, not wanting him to know she was delighted he asked.
He went to make coffee.
Never had she seen such big feet before. Why hadn't she noticed?
"I'll have coffee too." She informed him.
"Really?" He looked at her, as if he didn't think her mother would approve.
"Oh, she knows. Grammy always makes it for me. All the time. You know, half and half." She looked at him as if he should know.
"I don't think I have any." He looked at her puzzled. All he had were nondairy creamers and milk.
She pursed her lips as she perched herself at the breakfast bar. "Half coffee. Half milk and three spoons of sugar."
"All righty then." He smiled as if he could make it her way.
She wanted to know if he needed any help. He got out the box of pancake mix.
"You, want to try making it?" There were pictures of directions on the back. He went to get the eggs and the turkey bacon. She found a bowl. With his help, they made breakfast.
Lily liked it here.
