in the crossfire

in the crossfire

Will didn't know what to make of his grandmother. Why was she still here?

"Don't you want to go home?" He decided to ask since he'd been in  school a whole whopping two weeks. "Winter break is over."

Will watched Clare and Easy practically jump through hoops to keep this woman satisfied. Of course, she hated everything.

"I like it here." She looked at him as if she were a natural born liar.

"You, haven't even gone anywhere." He reminded her. "You, don't like the snow, nor the cold."

She didn't have an answer for him, other than he shouldn't be talking to an elder that way.

"Well, I've learned from the best, You. So, I'm going to say anything I please." Will swelled a frown, even if he did go and warm her coffee while she sat at the kitchen table, picking through a roll, ever so delicately.

"Just..just don't mess this up for Dad. What did he ever do to you?" Will practically slammed the coffee in front of her.

She did look a little shaken, as if he might be the teenage boy from hell, after all.

"He could still be with your mother." She pursed a frown. How dare she bring up his mother?

Will gritted. The thought of his mother, found with the others, after the flood made him feel so grim. It was hard to feel what his grandmother wanted him to feel.

"Don't say that. She fussed at him, all the time! He was never good enough. But he did a lot for her..that..that.." He cleared his throat. He hadn't thought of her for a while now. This was no time to get teary eyed. "She was too much like you." He said so bitterly.

She frowned more. She wouldn't even look at him.

"You know, you've got all that money. You, could be traveling. Even go back to the old country and see all those people, you talk about." Will thought that sounded like a good idea.

"I never said I wanted to go back there." She rolled her eyes, at that. It was as if they were beneath her. It was true. She was accustom to being treated like royalty.

Will contemplated the fact that she was still waiting to see grandpa. Of course, it hadn't happened yet. After all, he was spending time with his new girlfriend.
