a blast from the past

a blast from the past

Ivy wasn't expecting to find a baby on the sofa when she got home. Granted, it was asleep in an infant carrier. She stared at the sleeping infant for some time, trying to think who it might look like. She couldn't tell if it was a boy or a girl. It was small and nursed an imaginary bottle in it's sleep.

When she looked up, she saw him coming from the kitchen with a hand towel. It startled Ivy. He was startled, too. However, he looked very familiar as if she should know him. He said nothing, but went to the baby. Although, he didn't touch the infant carrier. He studied the baby as if he wanted to make sure it was breathing correctly.

Ivy found herself watching him, but it wasn't long until her mother came from down the hall. She was in the guestroom, where Joon had stayed.

"I told you, they were coming, Winnie and Dole," Her mother said as if Ivy's head was always in the clouds these days, only thinking of  Will.

She winced.

"My cousin's daughter and her husband." Her mom shrugged. "They're gonna stay in the guestroom. They've come to stay with us."

About then, Ivy's distant relative came from the bathroom and gave Ivy the stare down, but Ivy's dark eyes darted to Dole, as if she knew exactly who he was.

"Are..are you? Are you Joon's brother?" She wanted to know.

"Joon doesn't have a brother." Her mother blurted, as if Ivy should apologize instantly.

Ivy hugged herself. The baby awoke with a startle. Dole picked the infant up and went to change it's diaper in the bedroom as if he was trained to do. He didn't say anything. Although, Winnie looked at both of them as if he didn't do enough.

"I drove all the way from Chicago," Winnie said as if she was beat, but Ivy didn't quite believe her.

"Did you ask him, who his dad was?" Ivy asked on instinct.

Her mother looked at her, as if this was no time to ask such strange questions.

Ivy shook her head. She reached for her phone. Joon needed to know about this.
