it could happen

"Who's gonna keep the baby?" Betty looked at Doris as if her son and fiancee hadn't thought this through. "Aren't they taking a honeymoon?"

"I don't see how." Doris looked at Betty blankly. "They don't have time for that. Draco is busy at the University." She told her it was amazing they had a weekend off to do this. Usually, Draco worked at the art museum on the weekends.

Betty supposed she was thinking of herself. She imagined the young couple going on a quick trip to the beach. She didn't know why they couldn't spend a couple of days where Doris stayed all those months during the winter.

Of course, it still felt like winter. She hugged herself hard, going back to clean something in the kitchen before she started supper.

"Are things OK, with you and Ed," Doris said Ed was being awful quiet, lately.

"How can you tell?" Betty snapped. He was always quiet. Her frown was small, but she did her best not to worry about what Ed was thinking these days. He went to work. He came home to read the paper and usually they slept together.

Things were fine. Just fine. She had to leave it at that. Although, she was hoping for something romantic to happen. Maybe a bouquet of flowers, a ring, him on one knee to ask her to marry him. She shook the thought of that daydream. She went to get out the raw chicken from the fridge. It was too late for the crockpot. She would have to make a one-pot wonder and hoped she got to his heart through his stomach.
