a thing like love

Brick couldn't help but tell Lily how pretty she was at the wedding. Of course, he still remembered what his dad Gordy told him, he needed to respect and protect Lily.

He wished he hadn't told his Dad about the French Kiss, but Gordy always made him feel easy to talk too. Only, this time Gordy put him on the spot. Just what kind of young man was he? Brick needed to be the man his Dad thought he would be.

"You were never like this before." His dad told him he thought he was wiser than the average kid. "You said you'd always be there for Lily."

"Yeah, I know. I am." Brick was certain he would be the best when it came to Lily. Suddenly, his dad made it feel this was epic. And yeah, he did think he was above all that mundane stuff other couples coped with like sex and whatever else.

He knew he would never be like his real dad, who was now in jail. Brick never wanted to see him again. Especially, after the bad thing that happened at Christmas when his dad pushed him and broke his arm. He'd even had a concussion then.

Needless to say, Brick didn't want to be a guy who needed some quick fix of meth or whatever it was his dad got high on. How could his mother have ever fallen for an idiot like that? It was amazing that her mom found someone so ordinary like Gordy. And now he felt he'd let him down.

Still, he hoped Lily didn't think he was boring, either. What was he to do now? Never kiss her again?

He didn't think so. After all, he might as well proclaim she was his girl. No, he guessed he would let her have it her way. He'd be her man, no matter what.
