Blue October

It all seemed to have started when Natalie walked all the way to the public library on a beautiful fall day just to find out she couldn't check out the book she wanted. She hadn't brought her library card nor her driver's license.

Perhaps it set her off in a bad mood when her neighbor Effy who was a clerk at the library wouldn't let her check out.

"I'm sorry, we have rules." Effy was straight-lipped but told her she would put the book on overnight hold for her.

So Natalie left feeling Effy could have been kind enough to check the book out for her, either on Natalie's account or Effy's. After all, Effy knew her. They were friends. It made Natalie all the more moody that her friend would be this way. Perhaps, thats when the tension started in her lower back. At the time, Natalie thought she might be getting a headache.

After the long walk, she fell back on the empty couch. Joon, her live-in boyfriend was out playing basketball with some friends. Natalie did her best to stay calm and not to explode with her anger issues about the situation. After all, it was just a library book. Why would she get worked up over something so small?

But maybe that wasn't it. Maybe her allergies were getting to her, or she was tired from the monotony of classes and work. Perhaps, it was anxieties.

She took a deep breath, hoping she would see it was nothing unusual. She was OK. But when she tried to get up, she couldn't. Her lower back gave in and she was in such a horrific pain that she was in tears.

Thankfully, Joon got home. She told him she was in so much pain.

"I can't get up." It sounded ridiculous to say, but it was true. And she could see, even when he picked her up in his arms, he wasn't quite sure what to do, but to get her to the emergency room.
