Time is flying fast

"This is no time for you to even think about a baby shower, in your condition!" Koda would have none of it.

"But..but we're friends," Vanna said about Remi.

He was looking in the fridge for something to make, that was quick and nutrious. Of  course, his wife was sidetracking him with this nonsense of a party. He reminded her she'd already had a girls night out at their place. They didn't have time for this, and they certainly couldn't afford it with a baby on the way.

"You hardly know her," Koda fumed as he hugged himself while watching Vanna waddle around. He wished he could get her into bed, but he got her situated on the lovely recliner rocker that her mother had gotten her recently. Yes, they did get a lot of help from her parents even if they were divorced. Her dad made sure they had a carseat for the arrival of the baby. He'd even gotten new tires for Vanna's car.

"She is Harry's cousin," Vanna told him. Koda almost rolled his eyes at that. Harry didn't mention his cousin needing anything. But Koda hated to be a downer. He knew that Vanna still missed her friend Maisey (Harry's ex) who moved to New York City. Yet, he doubted Maisey would have even rushed in to have a baby shower for Remi. Why couldn't Vanna just worry about having the baby? Not other people.

"Alright, alright, I'll see what I can do," Koda shook his head in discontent. He remembered that his friend Brandon knew of Remi, too. He guessed they were still friends. "Just don't worry about it."

He didn't mean to sound so bad. He didn't want her to think badly of him, but he was having a tough time at work too. Yes, Brandon finally got him on at the Veteran's Hospital. He was in Supply, and there was a lot of walking to do. He still didn't know his way around. After all, he thought he'd be stuck in food for the rest of his life when he started there, but an opening came and the schedule was sweet. He hated to ask Brandon for anything, but he called him on his cell anyway.

"Well, of course, we'll help," Brandon told Koda over his cell. This was just like Remi, he thought. How could she think all she needed was a laundry basket for a baby? Soon enough he was on the phone with Yuki and Em. He told them how Remi and Wolf didn't have anything ready for the baby.

"We'll take care of it," Em said right away. But he could tell Yuki wasn't so happy about it. After all, Yuki and Remi used to be together. He'd thought time would heal all wounds, but he could understand where Yuki was coming from. He knew he'd never forgive his ex, either.

"We'll have it at our house," Em said she could make a list of people to call. "If ..if we could at least get a real crib."

"And diapers, lots of diapers," Brandon added. "Maybe some people where she works would like to come, too."

"Of course," Em was certain they could get a houseful, even if it was short noticed. "I'm sure she'd want Vanna and Koda there, too."

"We'll see," Brandon told them that Vanna's baby was due any day.

"Just let Koda know, we'll take care of it," Em said to leave all the planning to her. "It'll be a fun Halloween party."

Brandon, had never heard of such a thing, a Halloween baby shower. Sure, he knew of people who got married on Halloween. Although, the last person, a co-worker, he remembered who got married at Halloween, didn't have a very successful marriage. Hopefully a baby shower would go off without a hitch.

  1. Hello, interesting story. I know what Halloween is, but it's different here, it's November 1, All Saints' Day, and it's a sad, nostalgic holiday. However, I believe that any day is a good day for a wedding or baby shower. Everything depends on us.
Hugs, have a nice new week! I admire your creativity!

  3. Why not have a baby shower on Halloween, it's a time of year like any other. The fact that things sometimes don't work out, a wedding for example, has nothing to do with the celebrations of the season (Halloween) but with the attitudes and vicissitudes of life.

  11. We don't really have a tradition of organizing a baby shower, at least I haven't heard of one in my immediate circle. And it's definitely not near Halloween... the next day is All Souls' Day, a pretty sad holiday.

  14. I believe that a Baby Shower is a beautiful tradition and a great help for future parents. Newborn baby needs so many things! However, the most important thing for a baby is the love of its parents.
    Have a best Halloween ever!

  16. This excerpt captures such an authentic portrayal of the challenges new parents face! Koda’s protective instincts and the tension between him and Vanna about throwing a baby shower highlight the struggle of balancing responsibilities with the desire to support friends. I appreciate how you reveal Koda's character through his frustration and concern for Vanna while also showing his own stresses at work. The dynamic of family support, like Vanna’s parents stepping in, adds an interesting layer to their situation. It’s relatable and poignant—great job creating this sense of urgency and emotion! Happy Tuesday! Please check out my new post.
