Ste knew he'd said too much to Gabby. And yet, he was certain someone must have been on his side when the cops came with the ambulance..moments ago, down at the bakery.
Oh, they knew the youth, all right. He was in a ring of some kind. One of the officers mentioned while they were loading up the dazed and confused male.
"S e x t r a f f i c i n g," the thick man in the dark blue uniform said.
Ste winced hard. He could hardly believe it. The officer thanked him. Then told him they could use a young man like him on the force.
Ste thought he might pass out from the gratitude. No way, did he ever imagine it would turn out this way. But as soon as this Casey Carter got tended to at the emergency room, he was headed for jail. Not the youth center. He was twenty-three years old.
Ste looked at the officer, blankly. This guy was older than he was. Ste felt a little faint, thinking what would have happened... if Gabby had gone off with this Casey Carter? He might never see her again.
He was practically in tears now. How could he get through to her that she was with a bad guy?
Ste hadn't meant to scare her. He sat down next to her.
"Are..are you OK?" He couldn't let jealousy get the best of him.
She nodded and melted into tears, once again.
"The..the cops were looking for him." Ste nodded, as he looked away.
She sighed.
"Did he rob a bank?" She blubbered.
"I dunno." Ste hated to tell her what he knew. "Drugs, I suppose."
"Oh god." She croaked with her hair in her face.
Ste felt so grim, but he reached to push a lock of her hair behind her ear. He kissed her then as if they needed to forget Casey Carter.
Ste pulled her in, and held her close. Of course, they were only good at doing one thing and that meant not leaving this bed for awhile.
