the heart of the matter

Seriously, Joon didn't want to be the answer to all of Ivy's problems, but he knew he had to help Brian find a job or else. He could tell by the look on Ivy's mother's face that she was at her wit's end. He knew what she really wanted to do was kick Ivy's boyfriend out in the summer heat. But if she did that, then Ivy might run away and she didn't need the stress over that.

If only, he could get on with his summer and not have so many family worries, but Ivy's family had been there for him when he came back to the states and now, he knew he needed to do the right thing.

"Do you even know anything about coffee?" He asked Brian. Of course, he didn't. "Well, what can you do?"

Listening to Brian talk about cleaning bowling balls was laughable to Joon. However, Brian had never worked in food service. He didn't know how to run a cash register. Joon didn't know what to think. Was it possible? Ivy had found herself someone who wasn't all there?

Joon would hate to think it. Maybe there was a reason Brian was so lazy, but he'd found his way here to be with Ivy. Maybe he was faking it. Maybe he was smarter than he looked.

Unfortunately, after a day at the coffee shop, he'd managed Brian to get the dishes washed. Joon paid him out of his pocket since he didn't do the hiring after all.

"I think we should take a walk over to personal." He knew they'd need a new janitorial staff soon. Hopefully, they would hire him so he could at least get fulltime and some benefits.
