what friends are for

"Do you think she thinks of me at all?" Jools question left Evan choking on words.

Honestly, he wasn't that good at consoling anyone. He'd always been the quiet sort. It was amazing he didn't text like a savant while being in the same room with someone.

"Well, of course, Valentina thinks about you." Evan found himself saying as if Will was right behind him telling him the right things to say. He knew Valentina and Jools were close. Evan say them daily together at the bakery discussing how to make some sort of sock creature.

Evan when back to Lux's extra room to vacuum while Jools brought fresh bedding. They were helping out Lux to get ready for Will's move.

Evan liked having this little circle of friends. Honestly, he didn't miss Sawyer's presence. Sawyer was always wanting something. It was a rare treat to sit and do nothing with him. It was true, Evan knew he was boring. When Lux told him about Sawyer's new girl, he wasn't shocked. But he'd felt so gloomy. Evan tried his best not to sound so down, but he did know what Jools was going through, even if Evan didn't want to admit it.

"Have you met anyone at school?" He knew he sounded uncaring, as if Jools could leave his options open instead of fretting over Valentina.

Jools helped him with the sheets. It was quiet while they smoothed down the sheets and stuffed the pillowcases. Finally, they laid down the comforter.

Evan looked around the room. The thin closet was bare and the floor was clean.

"I wonder how much Will will be bringing?" Evan couldn't think Will would have piles of stuff to unload.

"Its not like he's moving to another country." Jools smirked.

"Do you miss your stuff?" Evan asked, realising Jools did have a life on the otherside of the world.

"Not too much." Jools thin lips were even. "As long as I have my phone."

Evan nodded, remembering he'd left his phone at his apartment. "Look, if you can't find anyone to go to Homecoming with you, I'll go."

"Sure." Jools sparked a smile.

Evan could see it was a relief to Jools, not to have to think of anyone but Valentina.
