We're walking in our sleep
The past year was troubling for Mae. It was a struggle to be anything, at times. She knew she put Ben through so much after the idea they'd never have any more kids. Still, they had his mom and dad. They didn't really hurt financially. Of course, they never spent any money either. Not like some.
And she'd remained healthy, trying her best to be the mom she should be to their little one. Work was good at the library. She loved the staff and the patrons. Mae did her best to find the good in everything.
And then a few weeks ago, they found out she'd have a baby in late spring. She was excited, but with a chance of worry. She was sitting Halloween out.
"I'm glad you found someone," Mae sighed with relief that Ben found a friend on the street. It was about time, she guessed. But along with Drew came Ellie and the girls.
It startled Mae when she saw the young woman and the little girls. Mae remembered her from her middle school days. Wasn't she the girl, who had everything?
"You were a cheerleader, weren't you?" Mae had to ask when they came by with a pumpkin to carve. Evidently, Ben was artistic and was going to show them how to make a jack-o-lantern.
"Me?"Ellie only smiled back. She told her she wasn't in many clubs growing up but she'd volunteered at the library. "Um, you were in the Improv club, weren't you?" Ellie remembered there weren't very many. "That must have been fun, but just as hard too," Ellie told her she wished she could act. "All I do is crochet."
Actually, Ellie was much easier going than Mae imagined. She was glad Cade had the girls to play with. Maybe they would become friends who could do things between the holidays.
