an ache I still remember

Bom showed up with lots of treats when Natalie told Joon the baby news. He was smiling, perhaps even goofy.

Bom hadn't imagined he would be that way, but she didn't question it. She knew how he would be if it had been her. He would have been withdrawn and speechless.

He didn't have many words now, either. He let Natalie do all the talking. Honestly, Bom felt she'd intruded.

Still, she wanted to neighborly. She wanted to be a good friend. Although she'd accepted the fact she wouldn't be best friends, she couldn't ignore them. After all, she worked with both of them at the coffee shop.

Of course, after she got there, she knew no one really wanted ice cream sandwiches in the dead of winter. To her surprise, Natalie didn't eat one, she ate two.

"Just what I've been craving," Natalie's laugh was soft as if they would be the best of friends yet.

"I hope you're getting enough rest," Bom said she would help out more at the coffee shop. She was certain Joon would remain cold, but he liked the idea too.

Bom was beginning to think he didn't hate her anymore. She knew it was best not to even wonder why. They had so much more to think about now, with the baby due in August.

Bom was certain, the days of that girl who used to drink with Joon back in Seoul were now gone. She would be that sibling he needed.

Besides, there was Cody to think about. If she hadn't moved here, she would have never met him.
