The pre-boyfriend

Dakota went all out for Valentines day. In spite of fresh snow and a snow day. She somehow managed to get a box of candy to Matty and to Kevin. But they both took the candy and she didn't get the response she was hoping for.

"It wasn't like I was expecting to get any candy back." But she didn't even get a thank you.

"Well, you might be asking for too much at their age," Xander shrugged who of course gave her a goodie bag and even did her nails at his kitchen table. He was the best at giving her the star treatment. "I doubt I'd know what to do either."

Of course, he did have a way of making Kevin sound like a little grizzly animal who was hungry all the time for burgers and fries. Matty was older and the quiet type. She should have known.

Still, in her heart, she felt wounded. Neither felt a thing for her.

"What would you like to see happen?" Xander asked. "Just think if you actually had a boyfriend you'd have to do everything with that guy. You know, go to the movies with, go out to dinner with. You'd have to be committed."

"I don't want to get married." She looked at him wide-eyed. She was only in elementary school.

"Precisely," Xander said. She thought she saw Xander smirk.

"Don't worry about them too much." He then smiled and gave her a pat on the back.

Dakota bit her bottom lip. She remembered then who showed up for her every day before and after school. It was Kevin. Not Matty.

She wished she'd left Matty alone. Still, Kevin was just a friend who liked to make her laugh and eat snacks with and to watch TV with. He might not be her boyfriend, but she knew she'd want to be with someone like that in the future. Someone who enjoyed her company as much as she enjoyed his.
