Sid & Cher
Was it just a dream? Had he talked to a girl practically all night before knowing her name?
His heart beat heavy now, thinking he must have lost his mind. But he'd gone off with Cher to the all-night diner and they drank lots of coffee and talked about the most mundane things.
Maybe it was too much. She would think today it was a foolish thing. But he'd gone back to her place, a boarding house across from the one he'd lived at. It was funny they hadn't met until now.
She was on break from the Uni. She didn't want to be a preschool teacher after all.
"It's whatever one wants me to be." She didn't seem to have a dream of her own. He told her he was undeclared himself. Yes, he'd been at the University, too. But he couldn't think he was much good at anything. He'd bounced around most of his life in the foster care system. Maybe he was a little lost, after all.
Maybe it was sad they'd finally found each other. Somehow, she made him smile. Although, he could see in her eyes that it might have been a foolish thing to do. But they'd slept together.
It was only sleep, but he'd never felt so refreshed. He wanted to do it, again.
There had to be a secret to it, what he saw in her. Was love blind? Was love intoxicating?
Truly, he wanted it to be a one-night thing. He was sure he'd see it different in the daylight. But she made him smile again. All he could do was to reach out and kiss her forehead, like some ancient custom. It was the beginning of something.
