social distancing at best
"We're not even sleeping together," Iona promised her brother Diago who looked at her wide-eyed in disbelieve. How did she know Micah anyway, he'd asked.
It was too long of a story to go in to, but she'd managed to get on as a cashier at the grocery store where Micah worked at night as a stocker. They could easily share the room without even seeing each other.
"But what if you both come down sick?" Diago was wary of grocery stores.
Iona showed him the mask she'd made from an old T-shirt. It wasn't fancy but it would work and she thought it might be more comfortable that some of those sewn up ones. She would do her best to make it work. She promised to sanitize.
"I'll change the sheets twice a day," she told him she would do her best to see Micah as little as possible. "You won't even know I'm here."
Of course, Diago only snickered at this little truth. He looked at her doubtful. Wasn't she a troublemaker, after all.
"You, haven't been around me in a long time." Granted, it was the welfare system that had kept them apart while growing up. He'd lived in boy's homes while she'd been given a so-called second chance with a relative, but it had been no fun. She'd always been under strict rules and now her Aunt wanted her out of the house.
This was the only place she knew to go.
"I just wish you'd relax. You don't have to do all this," Diago meant by finding a job so soon. "I can take care of you."
"You say that now, but I don't want to bring you down." She wanted to be the sister she needed to be for Diago. Somehow, they'd get through this, but it would be a slow process in the meantime, living in such a scary situation everyone was facing these days.
