Alfie spotted Lynsey in the family planning area of the drugstore. For a moment, he thought he might say something, but he thought best not.
These days had been like a rollercoaster for him. He'd been involved in too many mishaps these days when it came to social distancing. He'd put Melissa and her roommate behind him. He never wanted to be in that kind of situation, again.
Alfie watched from a distance. Even with a black mask on, he knew it was Lynsey and she looked around as if she didn't want anyone to know she picked up a couple of pregnancy tests.
Alfie sighed. He was too late. Someone who would always be special to him had already found someone else. He was sure of it.
When Lynsey turned his way, he turned away and walked straight into someone's path. And she recognized him.
"You're back," a sweet voice said.
Alfie looked at her wide-eyed wondering who was she talking too? He looked around then looked back at the girl, masked and in her grunge attire. She pulled down her mask to see if he recognized her.
He smiled, remembering her from his first day on campus. Back when people went to lectures and had to sit in two hours or more classes.
"Oh," he nodded. He'd forgotten her name.
"Poppy," she reminded him.
"Poppy," Alfie nodded wondering how he forgot her name. She was always so talkative, usually about nothing. And yet he'd found her interesting. They'd waited in line at the cafeteria back then and he'd been her captive audience. Yet, they never ate lunch nor breakfast together. Yet, they'd been friendly in passing. Like now, he guessed.
But Lynsey was coming this way, he decided to walk with Poppy. "We need to catch up," He started. As usual, she could finish his sentences.
I love this. Well done.
