Happy Halloween!

As long as Kevin was here, Dakota knew it would be a party. Not that she ever mentioned to her dad that Kevin was her boyfriend, but she suspected he knew. But Kevin was her best friend too, who she also called Noah from time to time, although these days he was more Kevin than Noah. And it was true, he could not have too much sugar. Even the red in hot dogs might make him a little evil.

Yet, he could be good as gold. She'd seen progress over the years. Still, she accepted all his flaws. And she knew he put up with a lot from her too. Yes, she was nosy and maybe too mothering for her own good which made most think she was too bossy for her own good. She believed she needed to be these things to be in Kevin's life. After all, he might have ended up in Boystown and she would have never seen him again.

Of course, the whole COVID crisis put them on pens and needles even if she knew he wouldn't speak of it, and neither would she. Especially, on Halloween.

It was sad not to go out this year, and they wouldn't be handing out candy either. Thankfully, they'd been out to the pumpkin patch and played some games. That would be enough to suffice. As it was, she was learning to crochet which Kevin didn't understand why.

Now she had her grandmother's old sewing machine, she was attempting to sew and even made pillows this week.

"Well, when are you going to make one for me?" He'd settled back for a marathon of Goosebumps and a bucket of popcorn.

"Seriously? You want me to make you one?" She looked at him as if he was really a little kid, after all.

"Well, yeah, aren't you supposed to make me things?" He looked at her as if she needed to remember he was her biggest fan or was that she was supposed to be his biggest fan?

Dakota only smiled at him and took a handful of popcorn. Oh, she hoped he still said things like this to her ten years from now and she hoped she enjoyed this..just as much. She was certain if her dad and step-mom were like this they would be much happier. Instead, her step-mom was busy with the baby and her Dad was always working at the factory even during a pandemic.

Yet, her dad was very married now. He held the baby as soon as he got washed up and he changed all the dirty diapers. She looked over at Kevin wondering if he would ever do that? Well, he liked to play with the baby so that was a start.

Still, she didn't need a hug nor a cuddle from Kevin. But if he needed to talk about anything, she was here to listen and of course ready to spend any holiday with him.

  2. Thanks! I have one friend who always questions me..how would you know what kids think? I guess I think back of my own adventures in growing up and how I felt about a certain someone..or two..=) & most recently, I had made this sock creature for a friend's grandson who is in elementary school. At first, he was like..what's this. And I told him ..maybe you can give it to someone else if you don't like it. Naturally, he said. "I don't like it." But he kept hugging it all the while. It was some time ago we all went out to a new food court and I had to sit with him while she was getting their meals and we had an interesting conversation about his dad and step-dad. I dunno..it was good to hear his feelings and well... we have more noble feelings as youngsters than we do as adults..sometimes.
