Matty did feel a little out place, having dinner with Valentina at Lizzy's along with her boyfriend Keir.
It finally sank in he was the youngest in the crowd and Val would soon be University-bound even if she was staying home. He wasn't sure he was up for this challenge, but he guessed he had to be. Of course, he had to listen to Keir chat about his job which was in management. Matty was used to chasing down shopping carts and manual labor for the most part, but it didn't seem to bother him. He liked being at the grocery store. He liked the customers. Usually, he was a cashier on weekends.
"Have you thought about a major yet?" Keir asked.
Matty shook his head no, he hadn't settled on anything. There was a chance he could get a scholarship in running or swimming, but he wasn't banking on it. He knew he'd start out undeclared. Besides, he would be a Junior in high school. Still, it troubled him. What would Valentina want with a Junior in high school when she would be in college.
Naturally, they were both far from the stress of wanting to get into someplace big. He knew Valentina wanted to go into some sort of textile major yet she didn't want to be a fashion designer. He liked that about her, yet he felt she should go to Art school, but she wasn't planning on being a big-time artist either. Especially, when she liked to make creatures out of socks or crochet.
Suddenly, it felt like they were both in a vast sadness. Yet, he knew they both needed to cheer on Lizzy's success at her job and be happy for her and Keir.
He did his best to follow Valentina's cue. The dinner was very trendy.
"Oh, you are such a wonderful cook," Valentina said.
"Well, it's low-carb," Lizzy said. "I'm used to cooking low-carb. It's helped my diet and when I was with my grandmother she needed to be on a low-carb diet too."
"It's excellent for me," Keir told them he was diabetic.
Matty nodded. He guessed there was much more to Keir than a great job. He thought of Liam then wondering if he knew about Lizzy and Keir.
Very nice 😊

ReplyDeleteI'm for low calorie which is both low -carb ,and low -fat.Why the stress on low carb? is it perhaps high fat? I'm not diabetic, but I know that high fat is not healthy either.

ReplyDeleteEven though Matty is younger than this crowd, it's great to see how mature he is. Totally understand his insecurities about his age though. Great chapter as always, Ellie:)

ReplyDeleteEvery chapter opens a new window for life. Low-carb is better.
ReplyDeleteThis brings me back to the angst of college and trying to figure it all out. To that end, the quote in the collage is perfect: "It's OK if you are a work in progress". Matty's anxieties about his major and love life are so relatable. I like that he likes working at the grocery store. You can tell that it gives him a kind of peace. As always, well done!
