"Well, I just don't know what's got into you?" Alfie said while Steve was flipping burgers on the grill. "I had no idea you could even officiate weddings."
"It's not a big deal." Naturally, no smile came from Steve as he looked at Alfie. "I always thought you might need me. You know, for a wedding. Like, you might need a quick one for one reason or another."
Steve rolled his eyes at that. He was here with Poppy. Although Steve's place was awful small they could eat out back on the balcony of his apartment. The girls were busy with something Victoria was putting together for Bom's wedding. Some origami flowers.
"Can you please stop talking about that?" His hands were in his back pockets but he was still a bit perturbed with him.
"Lynsey had her baby," Steve then said.
"Why are you bringing that up?" He winced as if that was the past, not worth mentioning. "I had nothing to do with that."
"But..but don't you still care-"
"No." His eyes lit. "Do you still care about Simon?"
Steve hesitated to answer with an indifferent stare. Alfie knew he'd hit a nerve.
"So...now you know exactly how I feel." Alfie almost pointed his index finger to him, but Steve handed him a plate of burgers instead. He was staying mute.
"You do love Poppy, don't you?" Steve wanted to know as they walked up the back stairway to the deck.
"Yes, but I don't want to revisit..you know-" Alfie felt tensed. Why would he bring this up now? "Just..just shut up OK." They were practically in earshot of Poppy and Victoria who were bringing out cold dishes of potato salad and noodles.
"Gosh, you guys have a great view of fireworks from here," Poppy smiled, looking at the clear blue sky like a theater.
Alfie guessed they'd be here for the Fourth too.
Happy 4th!

it's great these meetings between friends to eat and play conversation out, although there are some "sparks" from time to time ...

I follow your blog
No one likes to be haunted by the past. Alfie and Steve's conversation shows just what a minefield even bringing it up can be. But hopefully these two can learn to tolerate each other in time for the fireworks.
ReplyDeleteAs always, thanks for reading my blog too and for your thoughtful comments. I've been noticing the resurgence of bicycle shorts too! I don't think they'd work on me, though, or maybe they just remind me too much of third grade or something. Still, if your heart tells you to, then I say rock 'em! Also, thanks for sharing your gingivitis story. I too was diagnosed with it at one point, although nowhere near in such horrific terms. A specialist so special he didn't take insurance -- that's priceless, both in terms of what happened and the way you described it! Anyway, I'm glad you found a better dentist and then good old Crest Gum Detoxify. It's amazing how so many remedies we need are right in the drugstore.
