Summertime blues

"Which is it?" Brick was beginning to be perturbed with Matty. Or was it the fact Brick might be juggling two girls at the moment? Why was working at the grocery store so hard? After all, he was just the cart boy. Except he'd met Izzy who worked in the bakery and she was just as sweet as those cupcakes she brought him when she got off work. And Vanna was in-between boyfriends but she was quite the blond goddess.

"What?" Matty was a bit spacey with his price gun. It seemed everything was going up these days except their paychecks.

"You know, are you and Valentina still together?" Brick crossed his arms as if he was a little out of sorts with his closest friend at the moment. Chance was off playing house with Rosie this summer. It wasn't quite the bummer of the summer, but almost in Brick's book.

"Um, kind of maybe." Matty's wince was a bit uncomfortable, but he managed a shrug.

Brick rolled his eyes at that and fumed a sigh. "Look, there is this gir- woman who works here-"

"I don't need a woman." Matty looked practically horrified.

Brick sighed once again.

"If..if you could just help me out with Vanna."

"Vanna?" Even Matty knew what she was like with that squint of his. His whole face looked in pain.

"So you know who that is?"

"Who doesn't?" Matty scrunched a frown. "I gotta wonder who hired her because I spend more time at her workstation than my own." He said she was always needing help and god forbid if she broke a nail.

"Maybe, she thinks she's cute or the idea she's some kind of guy magnet." Brick shrugged. "Do you think you could go to the movies with us?"

"The movies?" Matty sounded as if it was unheard of to have movie theaters opened.

"She..she wanted me to ask you." Brick slightly smiled.

"Really?" First Matty nursed his bottom lip and was almost in a pout. Brick knew he wouldn't go. After all, Valentina wouldn't like it even if they weren't dating anymore.

"Val doesn't have to know." Brick said he knew what it was like to go out with older women. After all, Izzy had her driver's license and Brick only had a bicycle to ride, but it didn't keep him from coming over and playing video games with her.

"All right." Matty sounded as if he only wanted to hush up Brick because there was plenty of price checks to do.

"Thanks, bro."

Finally, Brick felt as if he'd entered the real world of dating. Even if it was a double date.

  4. Everything is going up these days, here too. It kind of scares me. After all, it's essentials we're talking about- food items.

  8. This is funny: "Matty was a bit spacey with his price gun. It seemed everything was going up these days except their paychecks." Also, I wondered who the blonde woman on your masthead was, and now I know it's Vanna. It's interesting to have an older woman, and a bombshell at that, enter Matty's sheltered orbit. Nice twist!

On another note, I hope you don't find a raccoon in your basement! That's much worse than a dead outlet.

    1. So true! A co-worker found one at their house a few years back. Also I heard of a neighbor who had one that got in through the screen..and 2 go in when they left the backdoor open. We just hear them on the roof occasionally. I feel as if they are Ninja Raccoons!

A Vanna note.. actually, she just graduated high school, but both boys feel she is out of their league and yet Brick knows that Vanna wants Matty.

When I look at the past I remember those summer moments where it's like the planets are out of line and someone would show up as if this was your fantasy all along until you got the truth of it.... was that they were lonely because all their friends were on vacation.
