Last Chance

It was kind of a no-brainer. Jools and Mick were going to Worlds of Fun and of course, they invited Valentina and Matty.

"We just never do enough together," Jools said and hadn't mentioned anything about Matty starting back to school nor asked, "Are you and Matty still together?"

This time Valentina asked her mom if she'd be upset if she and Matty went for a Friday night to the amusement park to spend the next day and possibly the weekend.

"I trust you," her mother said. Valentina figured as much, but just because her mother said it made her feel as if she was such a very old soul who might as well stayed home and watched THE GOLDEN GIRLS. Not that she would mention this to her mom.

Of course, when she texted Matty about it, he went on and on how he was almost in trouble last time, but since he'd never done anything like that before his dads had gone easy on him. She doubted he'd go. It would be a little strange being the third wheel, but oh well.

She put her phone down and then went to search her closet for anything to wear on this road trip. Finally, her phone dinged back. Yes, he could go.

She couldn't help but be elated. Suddenly, it all felt right. Being friends with Jools again. Having the brother she always wanted. Maybe she could stop worrying about being a Freshman in college. Why was she so worried? She started looking for swimsuits, cutoffs, and graphic tees.

Oh, she was feeling it. This was the last summer fling. Val knew she had to make it count.

Matty was surprised at how happy Val was to see him for this trip. It was kind of weird, he thought. But it was nothing to text home about. As if he'd let his Dad Xander know about what was going on. But from the get-go.... Val was all over him. It was like she was on some strange love drug.

He even thought of texting Brick. "Dang, I don't know what's going on." But he couldn't even reach his phone in his back jean's pocket. Of course, Jools rented a car big enough for the four of them. It was full speed ahead. Mick was riding shotgun and Jools had no time to know what was going on in the backseat.

By the time they reached their destination, it was dark yet things were hot with Val. She might as well have been GIRL ON FIRE. But Jools nor Mick didn't seem to notice. They were more worried about getting rooms at the hotel. The place was down to two rooms and both were singles.

"Is that alright with you guys?" Jools winced as if he'd thought of everything but hotel rooms.

"Well, I guess it'll have to be," Matty did his best not to smirk. Honestly, he didn't even care if they made it to the amusement park because he'd been waiting for this moment the whole summer with Valentina.

  2. To wszystko brzmi bardzo pięknie, takie szczęśliwe zakończenie. Warto czasami żyć i cieszyć się chwilą i nie martwić się o więcej

  3. I do hope Valentina changes her mind about this being the last summer fling. I do like her and Matty together....poor Matty if Valentina does break up with him.
Great chapter as always, Ellie:) And thanks so much again for all your recs. I am one of those weird people that have yet to see anything with Ji Chang Wook. I tried to watch one show he did but kinda gave up, but Backstreet Rookie sounds really good! Still watching Mouse:) I am really loving it!!!

  6. Ellie, your well-crafted, deeply sensitive and moving story led us along the hallways we are hesitant to walk but the ones that we need to know most critically about. Human-relationships are the bridges that we need to build and strengthen.

  9. Ooh, another road trip! As a diehard GG fan, I loved this part to pieces: '"I trust you," her mother said. Valentina figured as much, but just because her mother said it made her feel as if she was such a very old soul who might as well stayed home and watched THE GOLDEN GIRLS. Not that she would mention this to her mom." I actually have some new GG PJs that I'll be blogging about soon! But back to the story at hand. It's all about summer romance and fun, but with a kind of desperate edge: "Val was all over him. It was like she was on some strange love drug." I'm not sure how I feel about it long term (as in, should Val and Matty stay together?) but in this moment/chapter, the vibe is completely compelling.

I didn't know that you lived in a very old house too! My husband swears ours is haunted; one night when I was away, he heard a thump that he thought was a ghost, but it was just a troll doll that fell in the craft room. I enjoyed reading about your friend and love when you say (in reference to his mom's fears that he'd be bullied) "But I have a feeling J would have never let them make him flinch. He would go on. No matter what." Even your comments are inspiring and beautifully written. :)

Finally, I was so surprised to see my charm bracelet in this collage! Thank you, thank you, thank you! You are too much!
