We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl

 "What happened again?" Lizzy was trying to absorb the news from the old secretary in the main office of the City building. It had something to do with the old guy who retired in security and how that new kid Liam was helping his family out when he got sick with colon cancer.

Lizzy felt faint. How could that be? Liam to the rescue. He never rescued anything as far as she knew. 

"Oh, he's been a godsent to the whole family," the old woman said since she was best friends with the old guy's wife. "Liam moved in. He's engaged to the baby of the family."

Of course, Emily was no baby. She was a grown woman and had a full-time job on base at a preschool. 

"So you mean, he's living with her?" Lizzy couldn't smile about it. Honestly, she didn't want to think about Liam with anyone. He was her first love. Although, it wasn't exactly happily ever after. She'd put up with a lot with him. But he was still on her mind from time to time.

Not that she was unhappy with Keir. It wasn't like that at all. She'd finally got him to move in with her. Of course, Keir was reluctant to do so because he seemed to fear the worst with his illness. He didn't want to be a burden to her. But she couldn't let him think that. He'd never be. She would make sure he would maintain good blood sugars and A1Cs.

"God, why did that woman have to tell me all this," she texted her friend Gabby later when she was at lunch.

"You know, you'd want to know," Gabby remembered Lizzy with Liam. After all, they'd been friends since they lived in the same apartment building when Lizzy lived with Liam. Since then, Gabby and her husband bought a house. It was their dream home out past the burbs. It was huge enough for a crowd, yet neither wanted kids. They had their two rescue pups and a cat. Still, Lizzy and Gabby found time to be in contact.

"Don't say that, I'm with Keir and that's all that matters now." Lizzy text back, but she felt a little sad. Never could she imagine Liam being anyone's hero. Honestly, she did love Keir who needed her so much more than Liam ever did.
