When Vanna looked at Brick and Izzy, it was like looking at her past. They were still high schoolers and in love. She was only going to college at night. Actually, she'd signed up for only two classes. It felt as if nothing was going her way.
Just a few months ago she got to take a tour of the dorm where she'd be living, come fall. Granted it was an online tour, but still, it felt real. It was at the University where her sister Alison graduated. Only now, it wasn't happening.
"Damn pandemic," she wanted to blurt, but she was doing better at holding it all in and also handling the cash register. At least, she still had the grocery store.
Her parents hadn't fared well during the pandemic. They'd gone their separate ways and of course, they didn't seem to think of her and how her education was going to be paid. They'd even had to sell the house.
She'd found a studio and her sister Alison helped her get it and paid the first three months. Alison lived down in Lincoln so she wasn't too far away. Of course, her parents were still at war with each other, dating each other's best friends. Vanna had never seen anything like it and was glad she hadn't had to live with either of them.
"See, it'll be better than even living in the dorm," her sister promised with a smile. She said it would be good for her to be on her own.
Maybe Alison was right, but still, it took a lot to get used to. Dating was different now. Sure, she could have had lots of dating choices, but it wasn't like in high school. Actually, there was a lot to be afraid of. Maybe it was after staying home so much she didn't really want to leave home. She certainly didn't want anyone to know how available she could be, either.
So when she asked Jay if she could come over, she liked the idea of going to his place, not to her place. And there was the baby. Besides, she knew where he lived and she had no intention of telling him that she lived in his building, but in the basement.
I really wish the best for Vanna, living condition and even her dating life.

ReplyDeleteNight education is difficult, I wish all the best for her.
ReplyDeleteThis is an interesting glimpse into Vanna's inner life. She always struck me as so confident and glam that it surprised me. It just goes to show that you never know what's going on with people. And the part about her parents splitting up is so timely; I heard that divorce rates have been up since the pandemic. I'm excited to read about Vanna's dinner with Jay. The last line really shows how vulnerable she is: ". . . she had no intention of telling him that she lived in his building, but in the basement." So symbolic; you nailed it as always!
ReplyDeleteThanks for your lovely comments. I never thought of identity theft as extending to library cards, but it makes sense. I can only imagine the kind of characters you meet at work. I think I still have a $4 fine from a book I got out of the Brigantine library a decade ago. They'd relocated because of a flood, and when I tried to pay at their "pop up" at the civic center, they weren't able to accept debit cards or something. And so ended my book borrowing days!
Thank you, thank you, thank you for including my little (ok, big) circus barrette -- and the cherry fabric! That was a real surprise! You're so very kind and creative. :)
Good :-D
